To conclude the final week of the autumn term, students enjoyed a day out to the Autodesk Advanced Technology Centre in Birmingham.
We asked the students to summarise their visit in a couple of sentences:
It was interesting to see how Autodesk uses advanced manufacturing techniques to tackle challenges facing manufacturers. It was also exciting to discuss the future of making things and trends within additive manufacturing, such as generative design and hybrid manufacturing.

Inspirational. It was great to see current advanced manufacturing techniques being used on live projects, as well as the experimental and research spaces. Future thinking by Autodesk has enabled a facility designed and equipped to be at the forefront of the future of making things.

There’s definitely a buzz at the facility. The convergence of advanced software and manufacturing techniques in combination with highly skilled workers embodies the future of making. We are very lucky to have such an incredible facility in the UK and to be given the opportunity to see the inspiring research conducted. Hopefully one day, I will have the opportunity to make something here.

Visiting such a complex organisation was both interesting and inspiring. The machinery used is transforming industries around the world and allowing for smarter factories to be enforced. One part of the workplace, which was a highlight, was their makers’ space. This allows for employees to work on any idea they have, enabling creativity to prosper and fulfilling their statement: make anything.

It provided a fantastic insight into the diversity of manufacturing techniques, displaying great potential for people and machines to work alongside one another. In addition, the visit offered a valuable perspective on the future of making things, with the key changes being demand, production and product.
