PrintCity – Manchester Metropolitan University

Royton & Crompton Academy

Today we had the pleasure of introducing Year 10 students of Royton & Crompton Academy to the 3D Printing and CAD world. We started the day by giving them a tour of the facilities available at MMU PrintCity, for both students and industrial companies such as the new Farsoon UT252, ultra temperature SLS manufacturing system and a new Silicone 3D Printer. They were excited to be able to interact with different 3D printed objects and were curious about the multiple materials that can be 3D Printed.

Initially, the students were unfamiliar with the software, so we began the session by teaching them how to use basic tools on Autodesk Fusion like creating a Sketch, Revolve and Extrude. We then moved forward to creating a drink flask. This involved using multiple tools and quick design thinking. The students customized their flask to their liking by adding football club logos and different materials. Once we got the ball rolling, we moved onto creating the Champion’s League Trophy, which they were all excited about.

Lastly, the students were given the task to use their imagination, think out of the box, and design something that can hold water. They came up with incredibly creative ideas like a water dispenser, water park, fountain, cocktail glass, water beaker, and a variety of mugs. It was thrilling to see how much they had enjoyed this challenge and were able to pick up the skills in such a short time.

Overall, this was a phenomenal experience altogether and it just reinforced our love for design as we were able to share it with the younger generation!

This session was delivered entirely by current MMU students Amie, Rafal, Tom and Suhani. Great work!
