Sophie Thompson

Belfast born and bred, I came to Manchester to complete an undergraduate degree in Animation and I am currently studying MSc Industrial Digitalisation at PrintCity.  It is a sharp contrast to my work as an undergraduate, where I built geometric models for projection mapping, but I’m absolutely loving it!

To start with, I had no knowledge or skills in CAD at all, but now I feel completely confident in using software such as Fusion 360, as well as in operating the multitude of 3D printing processes and technologies that are available at our disposal. The space we have here is very inspiring, filled with top of the range printers and printed products. We are the first facility like this in the UK to get a Markforged Metal X 3D Printer up and running. It’s all very impressive.

The course has opened my eyes to problems such as the plastic waste crisis and to the prospect of contributing to a circular economy.  Through research, I am now working towards improving sustainability in 3D print and design and will hopefully carry this into my career in the future.
