BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Technology

“I first heard about PrintCity when I started my foundation year at Manchester Metropolitan University.”

We had an introduction about all the University’s facilities, and I knew that we had such a great opportunity to engage in 3D print technology.

I was very excited to learn more about 3D printing technology. During the first year of my degree, I didn’t have the skills in fashion technology and construction to produce a garment that included 3D printed elements.

After the first term of this academic year, my garment won first prize at a Prototype Exhibition and I felt my skills had developed enough to go on to challenge myself with 3D printing innovation.

To turn a fashion idea into reality, designers are often restricted by sewing on accessories that are supplied on the open market.”

3D printing technology gives designers the freedom and independence to create and make designs that were previously impossible.

Working with PrintCity was a very enjoyable collaboration. I have seen how busy the staff are, as many students from different departments are interested in working with them.

I especially appreciate the support that was kindly provided by Gary Buller (Technical Officer).

This experience gave me plenty of new ideas and allowed my imagination to reach new levels.

I also learnt how to work up a 3D printed image, from an idea to the final product.

After graduation, I intend to establish my own design studio and I am sure that I will incorporate 3D printing technology into my future work, as it provides the most exciting opportunities. I will be able to work independently with the freedom to explore new creative ideas.

I was able to make a leather dress with a shape that I would never achieve without 3D printed pieces.
