Outreach event: Burnage Academy for boys
Today we led the Autodesk Fusion and 3D printing outreach event. The day started off with 22 excitable kids from Burnage Academy for Boys arriving at PrintCity where they were then introduced into the pathway to higher education by Luke from the school’s outreach team. We then gave them a tour of the facilities at PrintCity, showing what it’s about and the amount of 3D printers we have, and the different printing technique and materials we make use of.

Afterwards, we sat them in the CAD suite and introduced them Into the basics of Fusion. We then helped the create a bottle using multiple tools such as sketch, revolve, extrude and thread, challenging them to think about how things are designed before showing them how to do it.
After lunch, we showed them the rendering tools in Fusion. Bringing their bottles to life, which was a nice way to encourage them to think about how their designs can become reality in a matter of minutes.

We then sent them off on the design slam with the challenge being ‘create something you could drink out of’. This was time based after which we crowned 2 winners, these received a £10 Amazon voucher.

This was a great experience and will hopefully demystify university and the world of 3D printing, design and engineering.
