PrintCity – Manchester Metropolitan University

Sophie Thompson

Belfast born and bred, I came to Manchester to complete an undergraduate degree in Animation and then MSc Industrial Digitalisation at PrintCity. It was a sharp contract to my work as an undergraduate, where I built geometric models for projection mapping, but I absolutely loved it!

To start with, I had no knowledge or skills in Computer Aided Design (CAD) at all, but now I feel completely confident in using software such as Fusion 360, as well as operating the multitude of 3D printing processes and technologies that were at our disposal. The space at PrintCity was very inspiring, filled with top of the range printers and printed products. We were the first facility like that in the UK to get a Markforged Metal X 3D Printer up and running. It was all very impressive.

The course opened my eyes to problems such as the plastic waste crisis and to the prospect of contributing to a circular economy. Through my research, I worked towards improving sustainability in 3D print and design, which I hope to carry into my career in the future.
