Thomas Dunhill
I have just completed my BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering at MMU with a 2:1 and am now studying Digital Design and Manufacturing to improve my skills and knowledge before pursuing a career in design engineering and digital design, hopefully revolving around CAD and 3D printing. I first started using CAD software as a part of my BTEC Engineering in 6th form and chose my BEng in order to continue learning about engineering and keep using CAD software because I enjoyed it and did very well in it.
My undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering was great because it provided introductions to many different types of engineering. I enjoyed increasing my understanding of the industry and different fields. However, it confirmed my passion for design and CAD, which was supported by my consistently strong results in those units. My final project drew heavily on my CAD skills. I successfully challenged myself by using CAD on a much larger scale, creating a model that included multiple parts, all of which needed detailed material selection and extensive testing.
While I was in secondary school, my dad bought a run-down BSA B44 Victor special which we fully restored over the next 4 years. This sparked a love of motorbikes in me and led to us restoring/ building 3 more classic British bikes together, a BSA B44 Victor special, a Triumph X-75 Hurricane and a Rickman Metisse Triumph Tiger
In my career, I would like to specialise in design engineering rather than mechanical engineering, and after discussing this MSc at the Careers Festival I realised it would allow me to further develop not only CAD skills but also my knowledge of design engineering as a whole.
